Writer and poet José Fornaris was born.

He was born in March 18th, 1827 in Bayamo, Oriente and died in September 19th , 1890. He studied elementary school in the San Basilio el Magno Seminar, Santiago de Cuba since 1835. From 1840 he studied in San Fernando School, Havana, and some time later in the University, where he graduated as Bachelor in Laws (1844) and Licentiate in Laws (1852). Among these years he took possession of his charge of Mayor of the City Hall in Bayamo inherited from his father. His earliest literary essays were published in La Prensa. He also tok part in the 1851 conspiracy and next year he was imprisoned for five months in Palma Soriano, former Oriente province, together with Carlos Manuel de Céspedes and Lucas del Castillo. Graduated as Lawyer in Puerto PrÃncipe (1853), he returned to Bayamo to practice his career. From 1854 he alternates his life between Bayamo and Havana. In 1855 he published his “Cantos del siboneyâ€, gathered in “PoesÃas de José Fornarisâ€, thus speeding up the SiboneÃsmo. In 1859 he gathered Cuba poética. with JoaquÃn Lorenzo Luaces. He was Co-director of Floresta Cubana (1855-1856), La Piragua (1856) and Cuba Literaria (1861-1862) When his friend, Carlos Manuel de Céspedes started the 1868 Cuban Independence War, Fornaris refused to commit himself and stayed in Havana. In 1870 he travelled along Spain, France and Italy. He collaborated in La Abeja, El ColibrÃ, El Almendares, Revista de La Habana, Civilización, El Siglo, etc. Consacrated to teaching in Cuba, his days were over.

Writer and Physician Ramón Zambrana Valdés passed away.

He was born in July 9th, 1817 and died in March 18th, 1866. He studied High School in the Royal Seminar of Havana. In 1836 he became Bachelor in Arts. In those years he has writen unedited poems. In 1845 he became Licentiate in Medicine, and in 1847 Doctor in Medicine and Surgery (he was the first graduated from this career in the University of Havana). He was one of the settlers and Secretary of the Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana. He joined several institutions, being among them the Royal Economic Society of Friends of the Country, the Real Junta de Fomentos and the Artistic and Literary Lyceum.
He was editor and settler of Repertorio Médico Habanero, Repertorio Económico de Medicina Farmacia y Ciencias Naturales, La Gaceta Médica de La Habana, El Kaleidoscopio and Revista del Pueblo, among others.
He collaborated in Flores del Siglo, El Artista, El Almendares, Aguinaldo Habanero, Revista de La Habana, Guirnalda Cubana, Semanario Cubano, El RocÃo, La Floresta Cubana, El Cesto de Flores, La Piragua, Cuba Literaria and La Idea.
He wrote plays and articles on medicine. Among his collaboration works are La Novena de la Madre del Amor hermoso tutelar de la Corte de MarÃa (Havana 1848), in prose and verse, composed together with Leopoldo Turla, and La Colombiana (1866), epic poem written with Luisa Pérez. He compiled the poem antologies: La Flor de Mayo, dedicated to the Virgin of the Tropics, edited together with Juan M. de San Pedro (Havana, Imp. De R. Oliva, 1838) and Cuatro laúdes (Havana, Est. Tip. La Cubana, 1853), with José G. Roldán, Rafael M. Mendive and Felipe L. Briñas.

Writer and critic Antonio Quevedo was born.

He was born in Havana on March 18, 1888 and died on February 3rd, 1977. Since 1919 he lived in Cuba. His profession of engineer was shift to music and art. Married with MarÃa Muñoz, he settled with her the important Musicalia magazine in 1928. Later he developed the Pro-Arte Musical magazine. Collaborator of several Cuban publishings. He was musical adviser of the Cuban Broadcasting Institute.

Writer and professor Medardo Vitier died.

He was born in Rancho Veloz, Las Villas, in June 8th, 1886 and died in March 18th, 1960. In 1918 he graduated as Doctor in Pedagogics in the University of Havana. He is professor of Literature of the Escuela Normal para Maestros (Professoral School of Matanzas) which he directed some times. He is general inspector of Professoral Schools (1942) and director of Culture (1944). Since 1952 he is professor of History of Philosophy of the Central University of Las Villas where the title of Honoris Causa Doctor was conferred to him. Author of “MartÃ, estudio integral†which conferred him an award; co-author of Enrique José Varona: su vida, su obra y su influencia. He also collaborated in the newspapers El Mundo, Diario de la Marina, Universidad de La Habana, etc.

Professor, historian, essay writer José Antonio Portuondo died.

He was born on November 1st, 1911 and died on March 18th,1996. He studied elementary and high school, becoming bachelor, in Santiago de Cuba. He studied in the University of Havana, first in the Faculty of Laws, from which he moved to the one of Philosophy and Letters, where he graduated in 1941. In those years he co-published MediodÃa magazine, and directed Baraguá weekly review. From 1941 to 1944 he worked as a professor in some Havana City private schools. He was one of Gaceta del Caribe publishers.
From 1944 to 1946 he lived in Mexico City because of an scholarship. In 1945 he published his book Concepto de la PoesÃa. Later he moved to U.S.A., working as a professor in the universities of New México, Wisconsin, Columbia and Pennsylvania. Between 1949 and 1950 he received an scholarship from the Guggenheim Foundation for developing studies on Hispanic American Literary Criticism. When he returned to Cuba he worked as a professor in the University of Oriente, Santiago de Cuba, from 1953 to 1958.
In 1958 he went to Venezuela where he laboured as professor of the Universidad de los Andes, Venezuela. He came back to Cuba in 1959. From 1960 to 1962 he was ambassador of Cuba to México and joined Cuban delegations to the VI and VII Advisory Meetings of Foreign Relation Ministers of the Organization of American States (San José, Costa Rica, 1961) and to the Conference of Non-Aligned Countries (Belgrade, 1961). He was appointed Vice President of the Association of Writers and Artists of Cuba, (UNEAC) from which he was founder and Emeritus Member. He worked as Rector of the University of Oriente from 1962 to 1965.
He settled the Institute of Literature and Linguistics, annex to the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, and he was appointed Professor of Astethics of the University of Havana, positions he took in charge until his death. In 1976 he was appointed Ambassador of Cuba to the Vatican until 1982.
