The festival is dedicated to the culture of Martinique, a small Caribbean island with strong ties with Cuba, especially with Santiago de Cuba, mainly the sister-city agreement signed by Santiago de Cuba and Martinique’s municipality of Lamentin in 1997. The delegation from the Caribbean nation is also made up of authorities and entrepreneurs, who are meeting with Cuban business people. Artists, intellectuals and academic researchers, including over 90 groups representing Caribbean native cultures, are also on hand.
The program includes cultural activities in 36 areas, galas dedicated to Martinique, Mexico and Argentina, as well as meetings of researchers of different regional cultures. Also one of the event’s highlights is the usual colloquium “The Caribbean, which unites us,” a space focusing on identity processes in the Caribbean and the gala to mark the 30th anniversary of the Casa del Caribe, an institution promoting the defense of Caribbean culture, identity and unity.
