The society of Afro Cuban Studies was settled in June 1st, 1936 in full accordance with the initiative of its first President: Don Fernando Ortiz. According to its statutes, its aims were: to study objetively, general demographic, juridical, religious, literary, artistic, linguistics and social phenomenons which take place in Cuba because of cohabitation of different races, particularly the so-called "black" from African origin, and the so-called "white" or caucasic, aiming to get intelligence from real facts, its causes and consecuences, and the highest egalitarian interpenetration of the diverse elements makers of the Cuban nationality towards their common historical destinies. Besides, the Society intended to develop cultural researches, to publish all sort of material, to arrange and sponsor lectures, congresses, teaching courses and other procedures of studies and spreading. Lectures, concerts, recitals and other cultural ativities. Among its members protruded: Nicolás Guillén, Juan Marinello, Emilio Ballagas, José Antonio Ramos, Regino Pedroso, Amadeo Roldán, Ramón Guirao, Luis Felipe Rodríguez, Manuel Navarro Luna, among others.
