He was born in Artemisa, Pinar del RÃo province, in July 14th, 1829 and died in Havana, in August 11th, 1888. Bachelor in Sciences of the University of Havana, Doctor in Chemical Sciences and Professor of Chemistry of the University of Paris, awarded by the Imperial Institute of France, corresponding member of the Academia de Ciencias Exactas, FÃsicas y Naturales of Madrid, Spain and of the Royal Academy of History of Spain, member of the Academy of Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana, director member of the Real Junta de Fomento and of the Anales de la Real Sociedad Económica de Amigos del PaÃs (Annals of the Royal Economic Society of Friends of the Country). In 1858, after 11 years abroad, he returned to Havana and fully dedicated to agronomy, specially to the themes of sugar cane cultivation where he developed outstanding improvements. Among his works are: Estudios Progresivos sobre varias materias cientÃficas, agrÃcolas e industriales, Apuntes acerca de varios cultivos cubanos, Agricultura de los indÃgenas de Cuba y HaitÃ, La alimentación inorgánica del hombre y los animales. His main work : Ensayo sobre el cultivo de la caña de azúcar ("Essay on Sugar Cane"), was translated to several languages and it is considered the top work on this gramineous.
