World wide repute Cuban scientist Alvaro Reynoso died.

He was born in Artemisa, Pinar del RÃo province, in July 14th, 1829 and died in Havana, in August 11th, 1888. Bachelor in Sciences of the University of Havana, Doctor in Chemical Sciences and Professor of Chemistry of the University of Paris, awarded by the Imperial Institute of France, corresponding member of the Academia de Ciencias Exactas, FÃsicas y Naturales of Madrid, Spain and of the Royal Academy of History of Spain, member of the Academy of Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana, director member of the Real Junta de Fomento and of the Anales de la Real Sociedad Económica de Amigos del PaÃs (Annals of the Royal Economic Society of Friends of the Country). In 1858, after 11 years abroad, he returned to Havana and fully dedicated to agronomy, specially to the themes of sugar cane cultivation where he developed outstanding improvements. Among his works are: Estudios Progresivos sobre varias materias cientÃficas, agrÃcolas e industriales, Apuntes acerca de varios cultivos cubanos, Agricultura de los indÃgenas de Cuba y HaitÃ, La alimentación inorgánica del hombre y los animales. His main work : Ensayo sobre el cultivo de la caña de azúcar ("Essay on Sugar Cane"), was translated to several languages and it is considered the top work on this gramineous.

Outstanding percussionist Guillermo Barreto was born.

Guillermo Barreto, a remarkable percussionist, was born in Havana on August 11, 1929 and died on August 14, 1991. He began as a drummer in the band directed by Obdulio Morales and later worked with the Hermanos MartÃnez. Subsequently, he was a member for many years of the orchestra of the celebrated Cabaret Tropicana. Later, he was also part of the groups of another cabaret and in the Channel 4 of Cuban television. He would also often perform with other ensembles, like Benny Moré’s Big Jazz Band and he accompanied big international figures, like the American singer Nat King Cole.
In 1959, he had the initiative of founding the Cuban Quintet of Modern Music and he later worked in the Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music. Guillermo Barreto also performed with the National Symphony Orchestra.

Cuban historian Jorge Ibarra Cuesta was born.

He was born in Santiago de Cuba, in August 11th, 1931. High School graduated from the Williston Academy of East Hampton (U.S.A.) in 1950. He returned to Cuba in 1951. Student of the School of Laws of the University of Oriente since 1952; he was elected president of its Student´s Federation in 1953. He took part actively in several underground struggle organizations settled by Frank PaÃs, until he joined ingin the July 26th Revolutionary Movement in 1956. He also participated in the struggles of the March 13th Revolutionary Directory. He moved again to the United States of America in 1956, now as a political exiled, and travelled along Mexico and Costa Rica. He came back to Cuba after the Triumph of the Revolution of January 1st, 1959. In 1960 he graduated as Doctor in Laws. He worked in the Provincial Council of Culture at the former province of Oriente, and was professor of history in the Provincial School of Revolutionary Instruction. He worked as researcher and editor of history texts in the Political Direction of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba (MINFAR). He is Attached Titular Professor of the Faculty of Laws in the University of Havana.
He has collaborated with Bohemia, Sierra Maestra, Casa de las Américas, Revista de la Biblioteca Nacional José MartÃ. He has published Cuba: 1898-1958. Estructura y procesos sociales, IdeologÃa mambisa and as coauthor: Latifundismo y Especulación. Notas para la historia agraria de Isla de Pinos (1900-1958).
National Award on Social Sciences.
