He was born in Cienfuegos, on November 28th, 1934 and died in Havana City on July 13th, 2002. After his earliest contacts with music, within his family, he moved to Havana, where he studied with Ardévol, Gramatges and González Mántici. In 1956 Aaron Copland gave lessons to him in the Musical Center of Berkshire, U.S.A. From 1961 to 1963 he studied in the Tchaikovsky Conservatory, in Moscow. Back to Cuba he worked as professor and music adviser.
He was director of the García Caturla Conservatory. He composed Muros, rejas y vitrales for orchestra, Atanos and Tres sones sencillos for piano, Oda a Camilo, Despertar (ballet), Sonata para violín y violonchelo, Cuartetos para cuerda, Tientos (Award at the Biennial of Young Composers od Pariís, 1970), Diálogos, Relieves, Hecho historia (ballet), In Rerum Natura (for chamber). In his compositions he made use of very new elements (and worked) electroacoustic media. He composed music for movies. He was director of the Departament of Music of the José Martí National Library and Chief of the Laboratory of Electroacoustic Music of the Higher Studies Arts Institute (ISA) until his death.
