Meeting between Antonio Maceo and the Spanish General Arsenio Martínez Campos.

The significant meeting between Antonio Maceo and the Spanish General Arsenio Martínez Campos in Mangos de Baraguá took place on March 15 1878.
In this meeting, Antonio Maceo became symbol of the revolutionary intransigence of Cubans as he said in a categorical way to the Spanish general that he did not accept the capitulation by signing the so called pact of Zanjón and that he was willing to continue his fight for the independence of Cuba.
This event has been historically known as the Protest of Baraguá.
Praising the laudable attitude maintained by Antonio Maceo in that crucial moment, José Martí would later point out: "I have before my eyes The Protest of Baraga" which is the most glorious moment in our history."

Writer and publicist José Manuel Carballido Rey was born.

He was born in Güines, Havana, on March 15th, 1913. Graduated as Doctor in Pedagogics and in Philosophy and Letters in the University of Havana. He collaborated in Gaceta del Caribe, Bohemia, Carteles, among others. In 1941 he won first mention in the Hernández Catá Latin American Contest on Story, and two years later the First Prize. He worked on the radio and was author of numerous TV dramatic and humoristic programs.

First issue of Revista Habanera.

The Revista Habanera, began to be published in March 15th, 1913, directed by Conrado W. Massaguer and edited by Willy de Blanck. His Chief Editor was Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring. This magazine was dedicated to world information through photography and published literary and historical, works, stories, etc. Among its collaborators were Fernando Ortiz, Aurelia Castillo de González, José María Chacón, Dulce María Borrero, Gustavo Robreño, and others.

Composer Calixto Álvarez was born.

He was born in March 15th, 1938, in Santa Isabel de las Lajas, Cienfuegos. He studied music in Santa Clara, some time later he went to study in the United States of America, and from 1967 to 1971 he studied in Poland with Dobrowolski. In Cuba he was under the guidance of Federico Smith and Leo Brower. He plays piano and organ. Among his works are : Sonatina, Quinteto de viento, Torus, Pocker, Música para orquesta sola, Stripofumios and Varsiflorius.
1950
Ceramist Fernando Velázquez Vigil is born.

Ceramist Fernando Velázquez Vigil is born on March 15th, 1950. He studied in the National School of Arts and in San Visual Arts Aceademy, where he registered in 1970. From his early moments he outstood as painter and ceramics was where he got the highest acknowledgements in Cuba and in other countries where his works were exhibited: Italy, Rumania, Japan, Germany, Poland, Holland, and Denmark. He participated as Jury in numerous events, and among his awards are: UNEAC Salon and René Portocarrero Award 1990; and awards in I and II Ceramics Biennial,1989 and 1999. According to Manuel López Oliva, painter and art critic, Fernando Velázquez Vigil´s ceramic work is the first one that takes daily use objects and carry them to the universe of artistic creation. Among his finest works are: “The Typewiter” and “Kept in a Glass” Because of a heart stroke he died in Havana in July 31st, 2002
