He was born in Santiago de Cuba, in May 8th, 1894 and died in April 15th, 1971. He work in different areas, among them: driver, carpenter, wall painter, etc, in his hometown. At the same time he was deepening in the study of guitar and cultivating his voice. He sang and played his instrument in Santiago de Cuba serenades, getting into the world of Cuban Trova. Natural, spontaneous and intuitive musician he made his debut at the Heredia Theater in Santiago de Cuba. Remarkable composer and guitarist, being a child he played harmonica and guitar; his first artistic experience was the duet he made with Trino Martinelli. In 1924 he travelled to Havana with the Oriental Trio, in which he joined Rafael Cueto (1900) and Miguel Bisbé, performing in Campoamor and Actualidades theaters. Back to Santiago de Cuba, in May 8th, 1925 Miguel added Siro Rodríguez (1899) in the Oriental Trio as second voice, genesis of the coming Matamoros Trio. Two years later he went to New York, getting great success leading the trio, and there he made some records for the RCA Victor discographic house.
He toured along all American continent and many European countries with his partners. Author of boleros and sones: “Lágrimas negras”, “Juramento”, “Reclamo místico”, “Mariposita de primavera”, “Mientes”, “Triste muy triste”, “Olvido”, “Mamá son de la loma”, “El que siembra su maíz”, “Que te están mirando”, “Alegre conga”, among many others. As guitarist and first voice, Miguel was quite sure in plucking, good taste and a had a singular sense of rhytm and phrasing. Deeply Cuban composer, his fresh ideas and eloquent rhythm made possible that his genuinely popular music was a synthesis of Cubanship.
