He was born in Navia, Asturias, Spain, in May 15th, 1882 and died in Havana in April 18th, 1972. Self-taught man, he knew several languages. He arrived to Havana in 1896, where he made office works until 1898. From 1901 to 1923 he lived in Artemisa (Pinar del Río) dedicated to hardware. From 1923 to 1936, but a brief staying, he lived out of Cuba. His campaigns in favour of the Popular Front took him to exile in Spain and later returned to Cuba.
His first bipographical study on José Martí was awarded by the Real Consistorio Hispanoamericano del Gay Saber, in 1924. His work Martí. Estudio crítico-biográfico (1941) was awarded in the Inter-American Literary Contest of the Central Comission pro-monument to Martí (Havana, 1939). In 1940 he was declared Adoptive Son of Artemisa Municipality on behalf of his intense labour in favour of culture, in agreement with the Municipal Chamber. Together with Fernando Ortiz he and Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring he shared the direction of Hispanic American Institution of Culture, and was member of the Academy of History of Cuba. He collaborated in Spanish and Cuban newspapers, among them: El Ideal and La Libertad (Artemisa), Orto (Manzanillo, Oriente), Social, Carteles, Bohemia, Revista Bimestre Cubana, Revista de la Biblioteca Nacional, Diario de la Marina, Lux, El País, Patria, La Rosa Blanca, Fragua Martiana, all from Havana. He is also author of articles and lectures on José Martí. He coordinated, wrote the prologue and made the biographical synthesis to the Obras completas de José Martí (Havana, Editorial Lex, 1946. 2 t.) Besides, he compiled the Ideario de Martí (Havana, Cultural, 1930).
