On October 17, 1987 the first International Festival of Lyrical Art in Havana, in which the world premiere of the Opera "Ernest Hemingway” by Russian composer Yuri Kasarián took place, was inaugurated.
This was the first modern opera performed in Cuba. Written in contemporary language, it was structurally divided in a foreword that reflected in a symbolic way the pacifism and humanism of Hemingway, and two acts with seven scenes, by means of which passages of the celebrated writer's life were remembered.
In this festival there was also a revival, six decades after its premiere, of the Cuban opera " El caminante” (The walker), by Eduardo Sánchez de Fuentes, who is also the author was of the habaneras “ Tú” (You) and " Corazón” (Heart), well known musical creations.
The first International Festival of Lyrical Art proved the maturity of the lyrical genre in Cuba since it presented the existent richness and variety in the country.
