Pianist Antonio Torroella was born.

He was born in Matanzas in May 17th, 1856 and died in Havana, in July 9th, 1934. Aka "PapaÃto". In the early XX Century he introduced the piano in the Charanga a la francesa musical ensemble, in Havana. One of the earliest and most significative cultivators of danzón in the musical environment of the aforementioned city. He composed some danzones, waltzes and dances. He was director of a popular Charanga which played in Havana since the early XX Century.

Writer José Machado Hernández was born.

He was born in Manzanillo, Oriente in May 17th, 1901 and died in Guanabacoa, Havana in August 21st, 1959. He studied High School in Santo Tomás de Aquino School, in his hometown. He passed 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years of High School in the Provincial Institute of Oriente, and the last one in the Institute of Havana, where he graduated as Bachelor in Letters and Sciences in 1922. He became Doctor in Civil Laws in the University of Havana (1925). He worked as lawyer, and later was appointed Judge in the municipal courts of Campechuela, Niquero and Manzanillo, in the province of Oriente. In December, 1927 he was appointed Second Deputy Judge of Manzanillo. He was one of the settlers of Las Noticias newspapers (1931), from Manzanillo. In 1934 he was promoted to Municipal First Deputy Judge of the same city. Next year he became Municipal Judge from Baracoa, Oriente, and presided the Junta Municipal Electoral of that Municipality. He collaborated, among other publishings, in Orto, Revista de La Habana, Diario de la Marina and Vanidades. He wrote several works on Laws.

The statue of Carlos J. Finlay was inaugurated.

The statue of outstanding Cuban scientist Carlos J. Finlay was inaugurated in Havana on May 17, 1921. It is in the park named after him located in the Padre Varela Avenue, commonly known as BelascoaÃn, and the Enrique Barnet, Maloja and Division streets in Centro Havana.
The monument is made of marble and it 7,40 meters high. The figure of Finlay is 2,50 meters tall.
Brass-cast busts of other outstanding Cuban doctors were later placed around the monument.
Ramón Mateu, a Spanish sculptor, was the author of the statue of Finlay and the rest of the busts.

Flutist Juan Francisco, "Tata", Perera died.

Flutist Juan Francisco, "Tata", Perera was born in Matanzas on August 21, 1874 and died in May 17th, 1933. At the age of fourteen he started his musical studies in Havana and two years laters his debut took place in the Convento de Santa Teresa. He was disciple of professor Luciano Raluy, played saxhorn in Santa Cecilia and Fire Department Music Bands.
In 1896 he joined the Cuban Liberator Army where he ranked in the Regimiento Tiradores de Maceo (Shooters of Maceo Regiment), and arranged a music band, with Chencho Cruz, that resounded in the very battlefield. During the Republic he founded the Havana Police Band, later Municipal Band. In 1914 he started the making, for the first time in Cuba, of pianola music paper rolls.He won the First Prize in contest sponsored by Havana City Hall. During the 1930´s he was President of the Sociedad de Autores Libres (Society of Free Authors).
Along 1900 - 1910 "Tata" Pereira conducted a Charanga type orchestra in which he protruded as flutist. He composed danzones and made arrangements for his orchestra.
