He was born in Guantánamo, in February 16th, 1917 and died in Havana, in September 17th, 1990. He learnt to play the piano by himself and later followed some piano studies. He began playing in his hometown until 1945, when he moved to Havana, and joined the conjunto de Arsenio Rodríguez and was also arranger of this son group. When Chapottin became its conductor, he worked as arranger and pianist. Later he played in Havana night clubs. Author of boleros: “Eso si se llama querer” and “Tú no puedes dejarme”, of sones: “Mi son, mi son”, “Sazonando”, “Se acabaron lo guapos en Yateras”, “Alto Songo”, “Se quema La Maya”, and “Quimbombó”. His piano style has influenced in Cuban and Latin American instrumentists.
