He was born on January 18th, 1948. His guitar studies took place in the Amadeo Roldán conservatory and composition in the Instituto Superior de Arte (Higher Studies Arts Institute) from Havana. His leading professors were Isaac Nicola, Leo Brouwer, Federico Smith, José Ardévol, José Loyola and Roberto Valera. Besides he also study, at the same time, Orchestration, Harmony, Counterpoint and Composition. his music has moved along numerous artistic variations, like: –ballet, dance, theatre, folklore, movies, television– as well as different orchestra formats.
He has joined the following musical groups "Los Armónicos" with Felipe Dulzaides (1964-1966); Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music (1967-1969); Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC (1969-1978); and "Nuestro Tiempo". He was also: Director de Danza Contemporánea; Director of the Mella Cultural Facility (1980-1990). Founder and director of ORU Group (group which gathered musicians from great Cuban musical lineages to research on African and Spanish roots elements, which conjugated with his own, and other composers, creative labour has conformed a selected repertoire on popular concert music, modality in which he outstands as one of its most brilliant cultivators.
He has performed at the most important Cuban, Mexican, Spanish and French stages. As soloist, and also with his group, he has performed in Canada, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Poland, Italy, Russia, Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, among others. He has delivered lectures and magistral clases in universities, research centers and other cultural institutions in the visited countries. He accompanied Alicia Alonso in her return to United States´stages. He performed in the Washington Kennedy Center and in the New York Metropolitan Opera House, among other important stages. Besides he has made dfferent works in electroaccoustic music, chor creation and musical theatre.
