José Martí ´s mother died in Havana in June 19th, 1907.
Through his brief, but fruitful life, Martí reflected the great love and respect he felt for her, both in his letters, as well as in some of his poems. Precisely,in one of his earliest creations, when he was 15 years old, he he wrote for her birthday:
Madre del alma, madre querida, Mother of my soul, mother beloved
Son tus natales, quiero cantar, It is your birthday, I want to sing
Porque mi alma, de amor henchido Because my soul, swollen of love
Aunque muy joven, nunca se olvida Although very yong, never forgets
De la que vida me hubo de dar. From whom life had given me
Also in his last letter written to her he wrote: “A man´s duty is there, when he is more usefu. But with me always go, in my increasing and necessary agony, my mother´s remember.”
