He was born in Havana in October 31st, 1897 and died in the same city in February 2nd, 1969.
He studied in the San Alejandro Fine Arts Academy, where he is a pupil of Leopoldo Romañach. His first personal exhibtion took place in 1924, in Las GalerÃas, Havana. In 1925 he travelled for the first time to Europe. In Paris he began signing under the name of VÃctor Manuel. There he knew and studied the classical painting, mainly th Italian Primitive painters, and he got in contact with modern painting from the post-impresionists. His style began to be transformed, abandoning, little by little, his academic teachings.
In 1927 he returned to Cuba and participated in two important exhibitions: A personalñ showcase in Februar y and in May he participated in the New Art Exhibition which settled he beginning of modern painting in Cuba. Since then he is considered one of the main reformists of Cuban Art, because of his ; incansable magisterio among the youth. In 1929 he went to Euope, travelling along Spain and Belgium. He settled in France. His Gitana Tropical (Tropical Gipsy) which has become the symbol of all his painting, was made in Paris, When came back to Cuba he already had his own and characteristic style expressed thropug two themes hich he never abandoned: Womn´s heads and Landscapes. In 1935 he was awarded in the National Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture; in 1938 his Gitana Tropical, was awarded in the II National Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture. In the 1959 Yearly Salon a retrospective exhibition of his work is included, paying him a tribute. In 1964 he began to express through a new means: la litography practiced by him in the Experimental Workshop of Graphic in the Cathedral Square.
