1850
Inaugurated the Principal Theater in Camagüey.

In February 2nd, 1850 the Principal Theater was inaugurated in the City of Camagüey, with \\\"Norma\\\", opera by Bellini , staged by the company of José Miró, in its opening nignt. During the War of 1868 the theater was occupied by Spanish Volunteer Troops as a reprisal against the patriotic activities held there. The architectonic project of the theater was made by Juan Jerez.
1864
Composer and Orchestra conductor Manuel Avilés was born.

He was born in HolguÃn, in February 2nd, 1864. He was an outstanding figure in his hometown and worked as a taylor. Being very young he studied music with the Spanish maestro MagÃn Torres. At the age of 19 he already composed popular tunes. He took part in the Independence War getting the rank of Sub-Liutenant in the Liberation Cuban (MambÃ) Army . Composer and conductor, he conducted for many years the Avilés orchestra, cpomposed by his fourteen sons. This group, integrated by grand- and grandgrandsons is still playing., Manuel Avilés wrote several hymns and som counterdances and dances. He composed quite Cuban, quite HolguÃn cocoyé-stiye pieces, different from the more Spanish cocoye by Casamitjana.
1912
Poet, publisher, journalist and professor Ildefonso Estrada y Zenea died.

He was born in Havana on January 23rd, 1826 and died on February 2nd, 1912.
He studied Bachelor in Arts. He is put into trial, facing a court martial, being believed accesory of Facciolo and Bellido de Luna for the printing of "La Voz del Pueblo Cubano".
At the beginning of the war he sought refuge in Mexico, where he outstood as editor and professor. There he directed "El Porvenir" school and was appointed honorary member of the Mexican Society of Geography Statistics.
Together with Andrés Poey he edited "El ColibrÃ"; He also edited "El Almendares" and directed "El Alba".
Among his works are: "Reloj de las Habanas", "Recuerdos y Esperanzas", "GeografÃa de la República Mexicana", and others. Great part of his work is dedicated to the children.
1969
Painter VÃctor Manuel GarcÃa died.

He was born in Havana in October 31st, 1897 and died in the same city in February 2nd, 1969.
He studied in the San Alejandro Fine Arts Academy, where he is a pupil of Leopoldo Romañach. His first personal exhibtion took place in 1924, in Las GalerÃas, Havana. In 1925 he travelled for the first time to Europe. In Paris he began signing under the name of VÃctor Manuel. There he knew and studied the classical painting, mainly th Italian Primitive painters, and he got in contact with modern painting from the post-impresionists. His style began to be transformed, abandoning, little by little, his academic teachings.
In 1927 he returned to Cuba and participated in two important exhibitions: A personalñ showcase in Februar y and in May he participated in the New Art Exhibition which settled he beginning of modern painting in Cuba. Since then he is considered one of the main reformists of Cuban Art, because of his ; incansable magisterio among the youth. In 1929 he went to Euope, travelling along Spain and Belgium. He settled in France. His Gitana Tropical (Tropical Gipsy) which has become the symbol of all his painting, was made in Paris, When came back to Cuba he already had his own and characteristic style expressed thropug two themes hich he never abandoned: Womn´s heads and Landscapes. In 1935 he was awarded in the National Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture; in 1938 his Gitana Tropical, was awarded in the II National Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture. In the 1959 Yearly Salon a retrospective exhibition of his work is included, paying him a tribute. In 1964 he began to express through a new means: la litography practiced by him in the Experimental Workshop of Graphic in the Cathedral Square.
