He was born in Santiago de Cuba in August 6th, 1894 and died in that very city in January 21st, 1971. his home became a centre of peñas trovadorescas (meetings where the trovadores sang traditional Cuban songs). Personalities of the traditional Cuban music like Emiliano Blez, Manuel Limonta, Rufino Ibarra, Pedro Bandera, Sindo Garay and Miguel Matamoros, among others, gathered.in his home. He sang with Miguel Matamoros before he arranged his famous trio. Around 1920 he joined a trio with Che Toronto and Rufino Ibarra. In 1952 he composed Estudios para guitarra. In 1916 he joined a duo with Ángel Palacio. He also joined trios, outstanding among them the one with Rufino Ibarra and José Toronto. Among his compositions are:: Amor de madre, Me causa celos (bolero), La gitana negra (song), Altiva es la palma (criolla), El jilguero (song), and many others. In 1962 he conducted the trovadores from Santiago de Cuba in the Popular Music Festival, held in the Amadeo Roldán Theatre. Singers of, and fans to traditional music usually met at his home.
