Gerardo Castellano García was born.

Gerardo Castellano García was born on October 21, 1879, in Key West, United States and died on August 21, 1956 in Havana. With his work Panorama histórico he won in 1936 the First Prize in the national competition of the Ministry of Education.
He was son of the Commander of the Liberation Army Gerardo Castellano Lleonart.
He took his first studies in his native city, and at the same time he worked in a cigar factory. He came to Cuba in 1899 with his family. Here he took piano and violin lessons. In 1900, he was appointed in a modest position in the General Treasury of the Republic, later Ministry of Treasury, where he worked until his retirement.
He was a member of the Academy of History, the Geographical Society of Cuba, and other Cuban and foreign cultural institutions. He collaborated with different publications, like El Diario de Cuba, El Mundo Cubano, Revista Bimestre Cubano, Bohemia, as well as in others in Guanabacoa, where he lived. He used the pseudonym of Gerardo Casiol.

Poet Julián del Casal died.

He was born in Havana on November 11th, 1863 and died on October 10th, 1893. He started studying in the Real Colegio de Belén in 1870. He founded the underground and handwritten newspaper El Estudio with some comrades. In it he published his ealiest poems. He graduated as bachelor in 1880.
He began studying Laws but he did not conclude this career. In El Ensayo (The Essay) (weekly magazine on sciences, arts and literature), was published his first known collaboration in a press organ. He visited the Nuevo Liceo (New Lyceum) thanks to his friendship with Nicolás Azcárate. There he met Ramón Meza and got in contact with the main foreign authors of the moment. He worked as amanuensis of the Intendencia General de Hacienda. In 1888 he moved to Spain. Shortly after he returned to Havana economically ruined.
He started to work in La Discusión as proofreader and journalist during those days he closed relations with the Borrero family. He was editor of La Familia Cristiana (The Christian Family) (1891-1892), a weekly magazine. He collaborated with La Habana Elegante, where he published a series of articles entitled "The Havana Society" ( Because of the first of them, concerning Captain General Sabás Marín and his family, he was fired from the Intendencia General de Hacienda), El Fígaro, La Habana Literaria, El Hogar, El País, La Caricatura, Diario de la Familia, Ecos de las Damas, La Lucha, El Pueblo, El Triunfo, La Unión Constitucional. Together with Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera and José Asunción Silva he was one of the modernist movement initiators. He translated poems and prose by Baudelaire.
Part of his prose was translated into English (Selected prose by Julian del Casal). He wrote under the pseudonyms: El Conde Camors, Hernani and Alceste.

Outstanding composer and remarkable author of boleros Leopoldo Ulloa, was born.

He was born in Havana in October 21st, 1931 and died in Havana City in January 7th, 2003. Since he was eight years old, he lived in Catalina de Güines.
Outstanding composer and remarkable author of boleros, he was the creator of “En el balcón aquel”, “Es mi súplica de amor”, “Como nave sin rumbo”, “Moriré de amor” and “Por unos ojos morunos”, among other boleros, deeply rooted in people´s heart by Celio González, Tejedor and Luis, Lino Borges with Conjunto Saratoga and other singers. He began composing when he was 20 years old and worked in a Havana store. His earliest works were guarachas like: “Sube la palma real” y “Mateo”, until he developed boleros. The EGREM (Enterprise of Music Recordings and Editions) recorded his LP: Leopoldo Ulloa: Canto a mi propia vida (Leopoldo Ulloa: Sing to my own life); and in 1998 the Golden Boleros International Festival paid him a tribute.
