The first stone of the monument complex known as " El Templete" was placed.

The first stone of the monument complex known as "El Templete" was placed on November 21, 1827 in the Plaza de Armas, in Old Havana. The work began from the plans of Colonel Antonio de la Torre y Cárdenas and under the direction of the Regidor Francisco Rodríguez y Cabrera.
The place chosen for the construction of El Templete coincides with the place where – so it is said - the first mass in San Cristóbal de la Habana and the first regidores (councillors) of the village were chosen took place in 1519.
The work was executed to respond to a proposal by the Captain General of Cuba, Francisco Dionisio Vives who advocated the construction of a temple to pay homage to the foundation of the city.
Nearly four months after the placement of the first stone, El Templete was officially inaugurated.

Singer Celeste Mendoza died

She was born in April 6th, 1930 and died in November 21st, 1998. She performed guaguancó style, so, she was called “The Queen of guaguancó”. Her debut took place in CMQ Television, in the 1950´s. Her following recordings were successful, introducing a way of singing songs in true guaguancó style, among them: “Soy tan feliz”, “Que me castigue Dios”. She worked in Cuban cabarets, radio, and television, and made numerous recordings.
