1844
Composer and pianist Rafael Salcedo was born.

He was born in October 23th, 1844 and died in April 15th, 1917. He studied music with his father, and, later, with Casamitjana and with Isidro Matón. Organist of the Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba. In 1856 he was sent to study to ParÃs, where he took lessons by Le Couppey, getting trained in harmony, counterpoint, composition, piano and orchestra conduction. He returned to Cuba.
In 1865, and some years later he settled the Sociedad Musical Beethoven. He practiced musical criticism, worked as professor and created an orchestra in Santiago de Cuba. He composed religious music, piano compositions and several symphonies. His music is influenced by clasicism, by French romanticism and Rossini.

Writer Cirilo Villaverde died.

He was born on October 28, 1812. Author of "Cecilia Valdés o La Loma del ángel", considered the XIX Century top Cuban novel. It consists on a monumental panorama of colonial Cuba from those years. This novel has been filmed and the trascendental Cuban zarzuela named after it by Maestro Gonzalo Roig, was based upon it. Because of his separatists ideas, he took part in the Trinidad and Cienfuegos conspiracy, was arrested in 1848 and sentenced to prision. He collaborated with Narciso López and later became director of the separatist newspaper "La Verdad" ("The Truth").
In New Orleans he published "El Independiente". In the United States he worked as a professor of Spanish. In 1854 got married with the active conspiratoress Emilia Casanova. At the end of 1858 sheltered by an amnisty conceded by the Spanish government, he travelled to Havana where he directed the Antilla printing house. He was codirector and editor of the literary newspaper La Habana (1858-1860) and collaborated wih Cuba Literaria. When the Independence War broke out in 1868, he joined the Junta Revolucionaria settled in New York, where he died in October 23rd, 1894.

Soprano Iris Burguet was born.

She was born in Havana in October 23rd, 1922 and died in September 11th, 1987. She studied in "La Estrella" ("The Star") School at La Vibora neighborhood, and being a child took part in many school musical activities. In a literary session arranged at her home she met Maestro Gonzalo Roig, who, some time later, paved her way to Art. Iris succeeded when she was 15 years old, since made her debut in the Amadeo Roldán Theater (then Auditorium).
She kept on her musical studies in the Academy of the Italians Tina Farelli and Arturo Bobbi in Havana. Later the German government conferred her an scholarship for higher studies of Music in the Higher Studies Institute of Munich, where she immediately moved. Iris successfully toured along the top demanding European stages. Studied Dramatic Arts in the Seminar of the University of Havana. Her first tour abroad destination was Mexico. Later toured to the United States of America and Canada. She was able to master six languages.
In January 1959, when the Cuban Revolution triumphed, she was living in Munich, Germany. In 1960 came back to Havana, becoming the first Cuban artist who performed in the late Socialist countries. When she died she was rehearsing a theatre play which she never was able to stage.

Actor Erdwin Juventino Fernández Sánchez died.

He was born in January 29th, 1928 and died in Havana in October 23rd,1997. Erdwin Fernández was the unforgettable clown Trompoloco, besides, one of the most outstanding artists of the four rmedia (i.e: the Cuban radio, TV, theatre and cinema) His book La carpa azul reveals the circus world into a dimension between a novel and a testimonyl. Dreams, failures, expectations: daily life within an extemely unique world. It is the chronicle depicting the journey of a Cuban circus through Central America in 1959.
