Raquel Revuelta was born in Havana, on November 14th, 1925 and passed away in that city on January 24th, 2004. Her chilhood took place in a very humble social environment, together with her parents and her sole brother, Vicente, also actor.
She began her artistic career in 1936, in the Corte Suprema del Arte (Supreme Court of Art) and in La Escala de la Fama (The Scale of Fame), programs dedicated to the search of new art values.
In 1941 she founded the Teatro Popular (People´s Theatre) and began working in radio, in
Mil Diez (1010 Kc) radio station. She was member of the Sociedad Cultural Nuestro Tiempo (Our Time Cultural Society ) which joined the most progressist artists and intellectuals from those years, and left a deep imprint in Cuban cultural live. In 1950 she staged Juana de Lorena (theatre) reaching numerous awards and paving her way to all media, thus becoming first TV actress, where she performed two steady weekly programs. In 1953 she made her debut in movies.
In 1958, she settled the Grupo Teatro Estudio, together with her brother, Vicente, where she has worked as acrtress, directress and general directrees for over 36 years. She travelled to
Mexico, Spain, Venezuela, China, Soviet Union, Switzerland, Germany, France, Angola, Bulgaria, Portugal, Nicaragua, and Egypt.
She was jury in literary contests and Film Festivals, both in Cuba and abroad . She also practiced teaching and formation of actors, being appointed Titular Professor of the Higher Studies Arts Institute (ISA), where she also worked as Dean of the Performing Arts Faculty.
She was General Directoress of Teatro Estudio; President of the Centro Latinoamericano de Creación e Investigación Teatral de Cuba (Latin American Center of Theatre Research and Creation of Cuba) a cultural institution of artistic promotion and research which gathers numerous Ibero America Theatre specialists.
Distinguished as Honoris Causa Doctor in Arts, from the Higher Studies Arts Institute (ISA), she received the highest awards and decorations conferred by Cuba: the Félix Varela and Juan Marinello Orders; Por la Cultura Nacional Award; National Award on Theatre 1999, Honor Coral Award in the 1997 New Latin American Film Festival.
