He was born on June 5th, 1955, in Brujito, Sierra del Rosario mountain range, Pinar del Río, and died on November 26th, 2002. From a country peasant family, his vocation was guided through canturías and traditional feasts of the region, playing percussion and vocal interpretation. Being very young he sang as well as composed with no academic music preparation at all. He has composed more 100 works including sones, guarachas, boleros, bachatas, and others. As a result of his regular presentations in different centers of his community he got in contact with the discographic house Lusáfrica recording two discs that he promoted internationally: Guajiro Natural and Guitarra mía, the former would win Gold Record and Platinum Record in Colombia, thus becoming Polo the most popular artist of the year.
He toured along several countries in Latin America and Europe, among them France, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium and Colombia, where he performed several times. Because of his peasant origin and for being quite spontaneous he was called "El guajiro natural” (The Natural Peasant”)
