He was born in April 26th, 1938 in San Antonio de los Baños, Havana province, and died in August 26th, 2003 in Havana City. Since his childhood, José R. Lázaro Bencomo, aka, José Delarra, leant to Visual Arts, he studied in the San Alejandro Arts Academy. He was imprisoned for fighting against Fulgencio Batista´s dictatorshi, so he was forced to go to Europe, where he finished his studies in Madrid and Florence. After the Triumph of the Revolution, in January, 1959, he humbly joined the just born cultural movement in the Cuban territory. He was director of the San Alejandro Art Academy and creator of monumental artistic works bemae patriotic symbols in different Cuban provinces..
Although moresocially recognized as sculpto, his painting “comes out naked, lmost transparent, from his creator´soul.” Explossion of lights and colours and peace of mind are projected by his triad og symbols: the woman, the horse and he rooster, It is true that it is impossible not to mention the author of so important works within the Cuban sculpture: the Revolution Square of Holguín, (1979), Bayamo (1982), Santa Clara (1988), the monument in havana City to julius and Ethel Rosemberg, the historical personalities of Commander Ernesto”Che” Guevara and his comrades, both in the island as abroad, the faces of the 38 fighters who died fighting in Bolivia, whose remains rest in Memorial Che Guevara, in Santa Clara province, and some others –up to bb 130- either of great, medium or small format, mostly historical and environentals. Totally, more than 2,000 works on sculpture, painting, drawing and engraving.His works are in private collections in almost 30 countries..
Creator of a worthy monumnetal work, in Cuba and abroad, Delarra counts with 272 showcases, both collective and personal, in Cuba and abroad, and has received more that 100 awards and acknowledgements, being among them: National Hero of Work of the Republic of Cuba, Deputy to the National Assembly of the People´s Power, Illustrious Son of San Antonio de los Baños, Alejo Carpentier Medal and the Replica of the Máximo Gómez´ Machete.
