In May 27th, 1867, according to Royal Decreet, the title of City is conferred to. Sancti SpÃritus, one of the seven villages settled by the Spaniards in Cuba during the beginning of the colonial period in the 16th Century.. Originally settled in Tunicú river banks, in 1514; six yers later the village was moved to the Yayabo river banks, when its ihnabitants decided to look for a better economic situation.
Due to its great importance, nowadays Sancti SpÃritus is part of the list of historical and natural sites, urban historic centers and other constructions officially declared National Monument.
Sancti SpÃritus is the capital city of the province named after it.
