The title of City is conferred to Sancti SpÃritus.

In May 27th, 1867, according to Royal Decreet, the title of City is conferred to. Sancti SpÃritus, one of the seven villages settled by the Spaniards in Cuba during the beginning of the colonial period in the 16th Century.. Originally settled in Tunicú river banks, in 1514; six yers later the village was moved to the Yayabo river banks, when its ihnabitants decided to look for a better economic situation.
Due to its great importance, nowadays Sancti SpÃritus is part of the list of historical and natural sites, urban historic centers and other constructions officially declared National Monument.
Sancti SpÃritus is the capital city of the province named after it.

Soprano Yolanda Hernández was born.

She was born in Havana in May 27th, 1945. At the beginning she studied in the Municipal Conservatory (nowadays \"Amadeo Roldán\"), later she perfected her art in Poland. Since the latests 1960’s she joined the National Lyrical Theatre and has played leading roles in operas, as well as performed recitals in Cuba and abroad. She has also performed in TV and has recorded a LP record. She played the leading role in Halka, the first Polish opera premiered in Cuba.
