He was born in Puerto PrÃncipe, Camagüey, in June 26th, 1849 and died in Pinar del RÃo, in March 29th, 1906. Son of the educator Esteban de Jesús and father of poetress Juana, Dulce MarÃa y Ana MarÃa. Esteban Borrero EcheverrÃa was a man of exceptional talent, remarkable as man of science and letters. From humble origin, he got his intellectual improvement only because of his will power, steadiness and intelligence. He took part in the 1868 and 1895 Cuban Independence Wars. In the former he became Colonel, and in the latter he served his country from the emigration. He was teacher, book accountant, poet, storyteller, essay writer, shoemaker, baker, pharmacist and Licentiate in Medicine and Surgery.
