He was born in Remedios, in March 3rd, 1823 and died in Havana, in February 17th, 1907. Being very young he wrote his earliest poems and a play: “Eduardo el jugador” (1835), staged at his hometown theater. Around those years he began collaborating in Faro Industrial de La Habana. In 1857 he had to leave Remedios and moved to Havana. In this city he worked in the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País, (Economical Society of Friends of the Country) on the direction of the Liceo de La Habana and as collaborator in La Idea, Cuba Literaria y El Liceo de la Habana. He returned to Remedios and settled a public library (1836). He became in charge of Mayoralty and directed El Heraldo, El Pensamiento and La Alborada.
He collaborated in the Boletín de Remedios, and dedicated himself to build docks and warehouses in Cayo Francés. Being involved in the 1868 Revolution, he was arrested and directly sent to La Cabaña military fortress, and later to Fernando Poo (1869). He managed to escape from jail and moved to New York. Later he went to Colombia and got his citizenship. He continued his agricultural studies and became Plenipotentiary Minister of Colombia to Madrid. When the war was over, in 1878, he returned to Cuba, En 1894 he went to Colombia, from where he definitely returned in 1898.
Knight of the Order of Agricultural Merit from France, on behalf of his work Higiene pública en la isla de Cuba. During his last year he collaborated in El Mundo. He is author of several comedies La noche buena, Los celos con desdén se curan, Ya no me caso, El enamorado sin dinero; of novels; of a Tratado de Derecho de Gentes and several agronomical and Economic Policy works.
