He was born in Santiago de Cuba in July 3th, 1825, and died in September 30th, 1898. He studied Latin and Philosophy in San Basilio el Magno Seminar, in Santiago de Cuba. Pupil of Juan ParÃs, Hierrezuelo and Casamitjana. He was a remarkable violinist since his teens, becoming fist violin in the Music Chapel of the Santiago de Cuba Cathedral by competiition. His wide works catalogue has been completely preserved. His compositions, based upon clasisism, raised from a romantic expression.
He composed religious and non-religious music, being the former the most remarkable. Among his religious works are masses, hymns, responsories, psalms, lessons, antiphons, invitatoriss, graduals, secuences, benedictus and other works, protruding among them his Stabut Mater. He also composed the symphonic poem América, several orchestra overtures, chamber music, numerous piano and violin works, dances and danzones, mazurkas, marches, the zarzuelas
"Me lo ha dicho la partera", "El viejo enamorado", "Desgracia de un tenor and Dos máscaras", the opera Seila. He played several instruments. In 1893 he published a historical study: Las artes en Santiago de Cuba.
