1800
Violinist, counterbassist and orchestra conductor Claudio Brindis de Salas was born.

He was born in Havana on October 30th, 1800 and died on December 17th, 1872.
His orchestra, La Concha de Oro (The Golden Shell), was the most popular on Havana salons along the early XIX Century.
Disciple of maestro Ignacio Calvo, he composed truly Cuban dances, almost always dedicated to characters from island aristocracy. He also composed an operetta: Congojas matrimoniales (Marriage Sorrows).
He was lieutenant from the Loyal Mulattoes Battalion. In 1844 he was accused to be in the notorious Conspiración de la Escalera (Conspiracy of the Staircase), so his musical career was halted. He was banished from the island by orders of Governor O´Donnell. He came back in 1848 and was sent to prison for violating his sanction; two years later he was declared free. In 1864 he toured the island performing concerts together with his two sons.
He became old, poor, blind and abandoned. Besides, a melody by him, dedicated to General Concha, and printed in 1854, is known. He wrote some poems.
His son, Claudio José Domingo Brindis de Salas, was a great fiddler, world-wide reknown.

Priest Ricardo Arteaga was born.

He was born on October 30th, 1843 and died on November 6th, 1915. He made his ecclesiastical studies in the San Basilio el Magno Seminar in Santiago de Cuba and finished them in Cartagena where he became a priest. Founder and Co-director of the Colegio Educación en Familia (Education in Family School). Being Deported to Spain he travelled to France, Italy and Venezuela, where he worked in the University of Caracas. He practiced journalism.
1921
Orchestra conductor and pianist Carlos Faxas was born.

He was born on October 30th, 1921. Since he was eleven years old he lived in Havana. He studied with Pérez Sentenat, Enrique Aparicio and Félix Guerrero. Pianist from popular orchestras, among them Cosmopolita jazz band. In the 1950´s he conducted the quartet named after him. Because of his revolutionary activities during Batista´s dictatorship he was imprisoned. He conduced the little orchestra which recorded, underground, the Marcha del 26 de Julio. (March of July 26th). Exiled in the United States of America, he returned at the Triumph of the Revolution (January 1st, 1959). He was General Secretary of the Unión Sindical de Música de Cuba (Trade Union of Music of Cuba). Later he worked as a pianist.
1933
Orchestra conductor, band leader professor, musicologist and composer Guillermo Tomás died.

He was born on October 10, 1868 and died on October 30th, 1933. His father, Tomás, initiated him in art. Guillermo Tomás settled the Instituto vocal Aguado-Tomás and the Band of the National Police. The O´Farril School of Music, nowadays "Amadeo Roldán", was also created by him in October 2nd, 1903. He arranged concerts. Among his compositions are: "Suite lírica", Esbozo de mi tierra, Dos impresiones and music for bands, for voice, choir and band and for piano.

Composer and band leader Luis Casas Romero died.

He was born in Camagüey in May 24th, 1882 and died on October 30th, 1950. He studied in the Escuelas Pías, where he started his music studies at the age of nine years.
When he was twelve he played flute in the orchestra of the Sociedad Popular Santa Cecilia. In 1895, when the Independence War started over he joined the mambí (Cuban Liberation) Army. When it was over he returned to his hometown, where he arranged the Children Band, and at the same time he joined a dance orchestra, during those years he worked as a printer in order to meet his economic needs.
In 1904 he moved to Havana, hired to conduct the Martí theatre orchestra. At the beginning of XX Century he joined almost all Havana theatre orchestras as first flutist. He conducted the Payret theatre orchestra. His criolla Carmela opened this genre within the Cuban song in 1909. Since 1913 he was Vice-director of the Band of the General Staff of the Army. He travelled through Mexico, República Dominicana, Canada and United States of America. He was professor of flute, theory, solfeggio and composition. In 1922 he inaugurated Cuban radio with his station 2LC. In 1933 he became band conductor. His most popular criollas are: El mambí, Carmela, Soy cubano, Mi casita and Camagüeyana.

Poet, essayist, literary crític and historian Ángel Gaztelu Gorriti died.

He was born on April 19th, 1914 in Puente de La Reina, Navarra and died in Miami, U.S.A., on October 30th, 2003. In 1927 he emigrated with his family to Cuba, where completed his ecclesiastical career in the San Carlos y San Ambrosio Seminar, where he became a priest in 1938. In 1932 he met José Lezama Lima and in 1933 to Guy Pérez - Cisneros, decissive facts in his literary formation. In 1936 he met the Andalucian poet Juan Ramón Jiménez, who published his poems in his Anthology of Cuban poetry. He sistematically collaborated with the magazines: Verbum, Espuela de Plata, Nadie Parecía (founded by him together with José Lezama Lima), and, finally Orígenes.
In 1940 the Cuban ecclesiastical authorities appointed him to the parish of Nuestra Señora de la Merced (Our Lady of the Mercy), in Bauta. Engaged in succesive and laborious construction works, linked to the most advanced artisitic and literary circles from his times, to a magazine like Orígenes and sent to a church in Havana outskirts, he was unsatisfied with humble construction works, but he invited the most dared visual artist from those year to make the stained-glass church windows and paint the walls of the temple, among them the sculptor Lozano and the painters: Mariano Rodríguez and René Portocarrero. Just finished these reforms and placed such valuable artworks, Carteles magazine, in one of its issues, dedicated its central pages to cover a wide information and description of the afore mentioned labours. Besides, cultural sessions which gathered intellectuals, writers, visual artists were held in his church. Those sessions were one of the most important artistic groups in Cuban culture and in them, as well as in the group publishings Father Gaztelú texts were printed. In 1984, he settled in Miami where he became parish priest of San Juan Bosco Church.
