Composer and virtuoso pianist Nicolás Ruiz Espadero died.

He was born in Havana, in February 15th, 1832. He studied piano with his mother and with professors Miró and Fernando Arizti. He was a good friend of Gottschalk, who guided and helped him, and propitiated edition and spreading of his works in Europe. Piano virtuoso, however he kept aside of concert halls for a long time. He was professor of piano of Angelina Sicouret, Cecilia Arizti, Ignacio Cervantes and others He played piano in the Havanese soirees at Ariszti house, as well as the Sociedad de Música Clásica.(Classical Music Society).He composed music for piano (more than fisty works), for violin and piano, as well as chamber music. His works : Elegía, para violín y piano, Andante , para violines, viola, chelo y piano, Quinteto, and, mainly, the famous, Cantos del guajiro (Chant of the Cuban Peasant) y Canto del esclavo (Chant of the Slave) are well known.

Musician Arsenio Rodríguez was born.

He was born in Güira de Macuriges, Matanzas province, in August 30th, 1911 and he died in Los Ángeles, California, in December 31st, 1970. His true name was Ignacio Loyola Rodríguez. Being a teenager he began to make music, but at the age of 13 he got blind. This was not an obstacle for him to develop his great musical abilities.
When he knew that nevermore he would be able to see again, he composed his most famous piece, the world-wide known bolero “La vida es un sueño” (“Life is a Dream”)
Aka “El ciego maravilloso”, (The Marvelous Blind) he founded his orchestra in the 1940´s, Immediately it became famous because the quality of its music, both for its lyrics as well as for orchestra arrangements. In the 1950´s he travelled to New York, residing in the U.S.A until his death . It is considered that he made reforms, in the music of his times. He was able to create fusions from some music genres and reach its characteristic timbre, which is still well remembered. Author of: “Bruca Manigua”, “Tumba palo cocuyé”, “Cárdenas”, “En su partir”, “Acerca el oído”, “Nos estamos alejando”, among many others.
