Sculptor Eugenio Corrieri Galli was born.
31 de Octubre de 1873
He was born in Toscana, Italy on October 31st, 1873. In 1899 he moved to Cuba and became Cuban citizen. His first work comprises four statues at the hall of Chamber of Representatives: Peace, Justice, Law and Progress. He participated in several salons and won numerous prizes.

Painter Víctor Manuel García was born.

He was born in Havana on October 31st, 1897 and died in that city on 2th february, 1969.
He entered in San Alejandro Academy, where he became disciple of Leopoldo Romañach. His first personal exhibition was held in 1924, in Las Galerías, Havana. In 1925 he travelled for the first time to Europe. In Paris he began signing as Víctor Manuel. There he knew and study classic painting, mainly primitive Italian, and he got in contact with modern painting from post-impresionists. He began to transform his style gradually quitting academic teachings.
In 1927 he returned to Cuba and took part in two important exhibitions: On February he made a personal one and in May he participates in the Exposición de Arte Nuevo (New Art Exhibition), which settled the beginning of modern painting in Cuba. Because of his work and his tireless teaching labour among youngsters he is considered as one of the leading renovators of Cuban art, since then. In 1929 he travelled to Europe, touring along Spain and Belgium; He settled in France. In Paris he painted the Gitana Tropical (Tropical Gipsy), which has become a symbol of his whole painting. When he returned to Cuba, he had his own and inconfundible style expressed through two themes that he would never quit: feminine heads and Cuban landscapes.
In 1935 he won a prize in the National Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture; In 1938 Gitana Tropical (Tropical Gipsy), got a prize at the II National Exhibition on Painting and Sculpture. A retrospective exhibition on his work is included in the 1959 Annual Salon, as a tribute to him. In 1964 he began expressing himself through a new artistic media: the lithography, practiced at the Taller Experimental de Gráfica de la Plaza de la Catedral (Cathedral Square Experimental Workshop on Graphics).

Composer and singer César Portillo de la Luz was born.

He was born on October 31st, 1922.
Together with José Antonio Méndez and other composers, he has been one of the most prestigious founder of the feeling musical movement, going beyond schemes and developing his work. He began singing as amateur with his guitar and in 1946 he performed in the the Mil Diez (1010 kc) radio station, where he got a program with his own songs. Portillo de la Luz´ labour has not only been as composer and singer, but also as guitar professor and historian of Cuban song.
His music has been used in different films and recorded in several countries. His songs are characterized by a text with a great poetic making, a wide harmonic sense and very rich melody lines.
Among his most memorable songs are: “Contigo en la distancia”, “Noche cubana”, “Nuestra canción”, “Noche en el mar”, “Ave de paso”, “Delirio”, “Canto a Rita Montaner”, “Perdido amor”, el bolero-chá “Sabrosón”, “Realidad y fantasía”, “Canción de un festival”, “La hora de todos” and others.
