Essayist Emiliano Gaspar Rodríguez died.

He was born in Matanzas in July 4th, 1889 and died in Havana in May 31st, 1939. He was educated in the United States of America. In 1907 he joined the State Department in Cuba, when he became Assistant of the Secretary of State and member of the Commission of the Civil Service from 1910 to 1912. He was editor of Teatro Alegre, El Heraldo de Cuba and El Fígaro. In 1918 he joined the Cuban Consular Corps. He was theatre editor of La Nación. He directed the Anales de la Academia Nacional de Artes y Letras and collaborated in El Triunfo and in foreign publishings. He was member of the Academia Nacional de Artes y Letras, to the Sociedad Folklórica, to the Círculo de Periodistas, to the Ateneo de la Habana, to the Club Cubano de Bellas Artes, to the Comité Intercultural Ibero Americano and to several Cuban and foreign institutions.

Bibliographer Carlos Manuel Trelles died

He was born in Matanzas in February 15th, 1866 and died in May 31st, 1951. Together with Federico Maza, Alberto Lamar, Nicolás Heredia and others the settled the Círculo de la Juventud Liberal de Matanzas (Circle of Liberal Youth in Matanzas), in 1886. He worked as librarian in the Public Library of Matanzas. He was member of the Cuban Academy of Language, of the Academy of History of Cuba, and of the Cultural Bibliografical. He collaborated in Patria, Revista Cubana, Cuba y América, La Discusión, Cuba Contemporánea, among others. He compiled the Bibliografía Cubana from XVII, XVIII, XIX centuries, and part of the XX.

Important Museum of Natural History "Carlos de la Torre y Huerta” was inaugurated in Holguín.

"Carlos de la Torre y Huerta” Museum was inaugurated on May 31, 1969.
The most complete collection of mollusks in Cuba is exhibited I this institution. Around eight thousand specimens are contained in the wide sample in which development and evolution of life from remote times are represented. The malacología collection includes nearly five thousand of the most attractive and varied coloured specimens.
The building that houses the museum is of colonial style and is located in the heart of the city.
The museum of Natural History located in Holguin carries out works of cultural extension through screenings of scientific materials and other types of activities.
1986
Tenor Miguel Ángel Ortiz died.

He was born in Havana in August 29th, 1922 and died in May 31st, 1986. His career began as singer of Cuban songs in radio stations in 1939. He studied with Zenaida Romeu and Carlos Dalmau, and professor Antonioni imparted classes to him, in New York. He sang in zarzuelas and operas. He has performed in theater, TV and cultural centers. He visited several countries spreading the Cuban classical repertoire.
