1847
Pianist and composer Ignacio Cervantes was born.

He was born in Havana in July 31st, 1847 and died in that city in April 29th, 1905. He began studying piano with Nicolás Ruiz Espadero. In 1865 he entered in the Conservatory of Paris, where he studied with Marmontel and Alkan, and got several academic successes. In 1866 he won a Grand Prix on piano, playing the Fifth Concert of Hertz. In 1868 he won another piano and harmony award. He expected to contest for the Rome Award, but he was not admitted for being a foreigner. He was very admired by Rossini, Liszt and Paderewski.

Federico Uhrbach, outstanding Cuban poet and writer died.

He was born in Matanzas in October 1st, 1873 and died in Havana in July 31st, 1932. He collaborated in La Habana Elegante, El Fígaro, Gris y Azul, Revista de Cayo Hueso, El Yara, Cuba y América, and others. Together with José Govín he settled the separatist weekly Los Azules. He was in charge of regular sections in La Nación Weekly. He married with poetress Elena Borrero, sister of Juana (1895). Among his works are Dolorosa (Painful), Previewed in the National Theatre, with music by Eduardo Sánchez de Fuentes; Amor de ensueño y de romanticismo (1908), the group of poems “Flores de hielo” (Flowers of Ice) published in Gemelas together with the poetries by his brother Carlos Pío, and others. Founder member of the National Academy of Arts and Letters.

Novelist Miguel de Carrión died

He was born in Havana in April 9th, 1875 and died in that city in July 31st, 1939. As novelist, Miguel de Carrión began writing works that settled contact points with Emile Zola’s naturalism, such as La última voluntad and El milagro, which, besides, stressed his gift of psychological penetration. would come Las honradas, in medium class environment and Las impuras, in the vice sub-world. Great realism works which reveal firmness and mastership in the making of their characters, and that are valid as testimony of Cuban society before 1959. Miguel de Carrión had a wide journalistic and pedagogical labour. Within its medical profession he published Los cálculos renales y su diagnóstico. He was professor and later director of the Escuela Normal (Professoral School), and member of the (Cuban) National Academy of Arts and Letters.

Ceramist Fernando Velázquez Vigil passed away

Ceramist Fernando Velázquez Vigil is born on March 15th, 1950. He studied in the National School of Arts and in San Visual Arts Aceademy, where he registered in 1970. From his early moments he outstood as painter and ceramics was where he got the highest acknowledgements in Cuba and in other countries where his works were exhibited: Italy, Rumania, Japan, Germany, Poland, Holland, and Denmark. He participated as Jury in numerous events, and among his awards are: UNEAC Salon and René Portocarrero Award 1990; and awards in I and II Ceramics Biennial,1989 and 1999. According to Manuel López Oliva, painter and art critic, Fernando Velázquez Vigil´s ceramic work is the first one that takes daily use objects and carry them to the universe of artistic creation. Among his finest works are: “The Typewiter” and “Kept in a Glass” Because of a heart stroke he died in Havana in July 31st, 2002
