Professor of Universal Geography and History, Fernando Lles Berdayes was born

His earliest collaborations were published in El Estudiante from Matanzas. He founded and directed Alma Latina, in collaboración with his brother Francisco and El Heraldo de Matanzas. In 1920 he quit journalismin order to work in insurance business. Collaborated en El Figaro, Revista de Avance, Letras, etc. Secretary of the Preparatory Commission OF THE Eonomic International Convention of Cuba. He won the First Prize in Poetry in the contest summoned by the diary El Correo Español de La Habana. He died in May 12th, 1949

Trova singer Ramón Marquez was born.

He was born in Santiago de Cuba in August 31st, 1908 and died in June 27th, 1980. Second voice. He has joined duos and trios in his hometown. He performed together with Ángel Almenares and joined the Trío Azul. He also used to sing with several trovadores of the eastern province of Cuba.

He was born in Pinar del Río, in October 28th,1932 and died in Havana, in August 31st, 1962.
He made his elementary studies in his hometown, where he also studied High School and Commerce. In 1950 he came to Havana and began studying Social Sciences in its University. Next year he quit studying and went to Europe. He lived in París and travelled through Spain and Italy.
In Europe he collaborated in Le Premier Bilan del’Art Actuel (Cahiers Le Soleil Noir) and in the magazines: Le Soleil Noir, Positions, Espacio and Panderma. After having returned definitively to Cuba he worked in Revolución and Lunes de Revolución.
He collaborated in Casa de las Américas, Unión, La Gaceta de Cuba and Bohemia magazines. He gave lessons of French and History of Art and Literature in the Professional School of Journalism in Havana.
He took active part in the mobilization against the mercenary agression of Bay of Pigs and in the struggle against bandits in the Escambray mountain range. He participated in the First National Congress of Writers and Artists of Cuba and was elected Secretary of Public Relations of the National Association of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC). He delivered lectures on painting an philosophy.

Flutist, composer and arranger Eduardo Martínez Egües "Richard" Passed away.

He was born in Cruces, Las Villas, in October 26th, 1923 and died in August 31, 2006. Flutist, composer and arranger. He studied with his father. He played in Santa Clara Municipal Band. He played in different orchestras until he joined the Orquesta Aragón in 1953. Charanga type orchestra to which he gave a quite characteristic sound wtih his flute. He mastered several musical instruments. Among his numerous compositions are: “El bodeguero” ,“El Cuini”, “Sabrosona”, “Bombón cha”, “El cerquillo” and other popular pieces. His real name was Eduardo.
Besides, he has also played symphonic music concerts.
