He was born in Havana on June 12th, 1893 and died on December 4th, 1950. When he was five years old he began to study piano, at the age of nine he staged in a school party his musical play La geografía física, and at the age of thirteen played the piano in La Caricatura Cinema entertaining silent movies. At the age of sixteen he conducted the orchestra of the Havana Politeama. In 1926 he toured the island heading the orchestra of the Arquímedes Pous Company.
Later he went to different nations of America with a group of Cuban artists and musicians. In 1932, just few months after having returned, he had to leave the country because dictator Gerardo Machado´s henchmen were after him. He came back to Havana one year later, when the dictatorship was overthrown. In 1936 he went to New York where he developed a positive labor spreading Cuban music; there he intoduced the Conga. Then, he travelled to Spain and other European centers and shortly afterwards he came back.
He created music for some films: Escándalo de estrellas, Conga bar, Estampas coloniales, Milonga de arrabal and many theatre plays: Niña Rita, La canción del mendigo, Bohemia, Como las golondrinas, La virgen morena, El submarino cubano, as well as Nicolás Guillén poems, Motivos de son. In 1948 he won the First Prize in the Cuban Song Contest with “El Sitierito”.
Within his work outstands the danzones: “La Mora”, “Si me pides el pescao”, “Si muero en la Carretera”, “Papa Montero”; the songs: “Las perlas de tu boca”, “Tabaco verde”, “Lamento esclavo”, los pregones: “Rica pulpa”, “El tamalero”; the tangos congos: “Espabílate”, “Mama Inés”; the sones: “Facundo”, “Lamento cubano”, “Negro bembón”; and, specially, the sucu-sucu (his recreation from Isle of Pines folklore): “Felipe Blanco” and “Domingo Pantoja”.
