Humanist, polyglot, historian, bibliographer, poet Domingo del Monte was born.

He was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, on August 4th, 1804 and died in Madrid on November 4th, 1853. His remains were brought to Cuba, arriving in April 12th, 1854. Domingo del Monte, son of Dominicans, settled in Cuba since the age of six.
He studied Philosophy and Laws in the University of Havana, where he made friendship with José María Heredia and with the best of Cuban intellectuals. He knew the problems that injured the Island and learned to love it as his sole motherland. Humanist, polyglot, historian, bibliographer, poet, he published in \"La moda o Recreo Semanal del Bello Sexo\", \"Revista Bimestre Cubana\", \"El Revisor Político y Literario\", \"El Plantel\". His collaborations to Cuban culture were significative, because he encouraged and assisted many in their efforts, José Jacinto Milanés, Anselmo Suárez y Romero, José María Heredia, José Antonio Saco and Francisco Manzano, among others, constitute an example.
His early poetries were collected in \"Rimas Americanas\". He left unedited: \"Bibliografía cubana\" and \"Teatro de la isla Fernandina\".

Writer Antonio Angulo y Heredia was born.

He was born in Matanzas, in August 4th, 1837 and died in Valladolid, Spain, in 1875. Nephew of José María Heredia. He studied in "La Empresa", "El Plantel" and "El Salvador" schools. In the latter, he studied Philosophy and settled a Profesorship, In 1855 he wrote his earliest collaborations to "Brisas de Cuba" and "Revista de La Habana".
He studied the earliest years of Law in the University of Havana. In 1862 he moved to Madrid, graduated there as a lawyer and settled the "Revista Hispano Americana", from which he was also co-publisher and co-writer, and published there his “Estudios sobre los Estados Unidos de América” and made public his position concerning the Cuban political situation. From Madrid he sent to "Aurora del Yumurí", his "Cartas" ("Letters") on the scientific and literary movement in Spain and other European countries, under the pseudonym of: "Un joven cubano" ("A Cuban Youngster"), sent to Jesús B. Gálvez. He is also author of a defense of José de la Luz y Caballero facing the Madrid newspaper "El Pensamiento Español". In El Ateneo of Madrid he imparted lessons on German Literature, from which he was consider a great specialist. He translated "The Bell" from Schiller, and "París in América", by Leboulaye. Among his works are: "Goethe y Schiller. Su vida, sus obras y su influencia en Alemania", "El Pensamiento Español, periódico neocatólico de Madrid y la instrucción pública en la Isla de Cuba", "Estudios sobre los Estados Unidos de América". "La democracia y el self-government". At the end of his life he suffered from a period of insanity.

Percusionist Domingo Aragú was born.

He was born in San Juan de los Yeras, Las Villas, in August 4th, 1910. He began studying in his hometown, and carried them on with Pedro Garcés in Cienfuegos, some time later. In 1933 he moved to Havana, where he joined the Philarmonic Orchestra of this City. He has developed an important labour on the formation of Cuban percusionists, as well as in the Municipal Conservatory of Havana (nowadays "Amadeo Roldán"), as in the "García Caturla" Conservatory and in the National School of Arts. He was esentially self-taught as percusionist. He was part of the National Symphonic Orchestra since it was settled, being praised by each and every foreign conductor, who lead it. He worked as professor in the Higher Studies Arts Institute.

Playwright Virgilio Piñera was born.

He studied elementary school in en Cárdenas and died in Havana on October 18th, 1979. In 1925 he moved wih his family to Camagüey, where he studied high school. He settled in Havana in 1938. In 1940 he became Ph Degree in the University of Havana. He founded and directed Poeta magazine in 1942. In Buenos Aires, where he lived 14 years, he worked as official of the Cuban Consulate, as proofreader, and later as translater of the Argos publishing house.
He has travelled through all Latin America, United States of America and Europe. He collaborated in Espuela de Plata, Grafos, Clavileño, Ultra, Orígenes, Gaceta del Caribe, Lyceum, Universidad de la Habana, Lunes de Revolución, La Gaceta de Cuba, Unión. He also collaborated, in Sur, Hoy, Realidad, Mundo Argentino and Anales de Buenos Aires in Buenos Aires. Besides he collaborated in Lettres Nouvelles and in Les Temps Modernes, in París. With José Rodríguez Feo he settled Ciclón in 1955. He directed Ediciones R (1960-1964).
He won the 1968 Casa de las Américas theatre award by his play Dos viejos pánicos (Two Old Panics) He is author of the selection and notes of Teatro del absurdo, anthology which gathers plays by Ionesco, Beckett, Pinter, Mrozek. He translated Juan Azul, by Jean Giono; Así habló el tío (Thus Spoke the Uncle) by Jean Price Mars, and Tribálicas, by Henri Lopes, among others. He Took part in translating Ferdydurke, by the Polish Witold Gombrowicz. Some of his stories and his poems have been translated into English, Italian, German, Russian, Hungarian, Polish, etc. Cuentos fríos (Cold Stories) was translated into French.

Composer and performer Antonio “Ñico Saquito” Fernández died.

He was known in the Cuban musical world with the nickname of Ñico Saquito, was born on January 17, 1902 in Santiago de Cuba. He was a remarkable composer and performer. He created a large number of picaresque guarachas which became very popular in our country, like those entitled "Compay Gallo" and "María Cristina", just to mention two as an example.
He began to learn to play the guitar when he was 15 years old and some time later he began his life as a troubadour. Ñico Saquito was member of quartets and other ensembles. As a composer, he reflected in his creations with a critical approach aspects of the reality he lived in. Antonio “Ñico Saquito” Fernández died on August 4, 1982, but the importance of his life and work are still present in Cuban musical history.
