He was born in Havana in March 28th, 1903 and died in September 4th, 1966. He studied elementary school in the Escuelas Pías of Guanabacoa and High School in the Institute of Havana (1922). He graduated in the University of Havana as Doctor in Civil Laws (1927), in Public Laws (1928) and in Philosophy and Letters (1929). Being instructor professor of Sociology in the aforementioned university on (1929-1930), he quit during Gerardo Machado dictatorship. In 1934 returned to the University to take care of the Chairs of History of Cuba and Cuban Sociology.
He was member of the Sección de Ciencias Históricas del Ateneo de La Habana (Section of Historical Sciences of Havana Atheneum), Library of the Sociedad Económica Amigos del País, Founder of the Instituto de Altos Estudios de Cuba, (Institute of Higher Studies of Cuba) corresponding member of the Círculo de Altos Estudios de Rosario (Argentina) (Circle of High Studies of Rosario) and member of the Instituto Internacional de Estudios Ibero-Americanos de París (International Institute of Ibero-American Studies of Paris). He directed Universidad de La Habana and Vida Universitaria magazines. He was also Edition Secretary of the Revista Bimestre Cubana, and collaborated in Cuba Contemporánea, Repertorio Americano (Costa Rica), Revista de Occidente.
He delivered numerous lectures and published his “Historia Social” in Volume 4 of Historia de la Nación Cubana. He also selected the anthology: José Martí Ideas Políticas y Sociales. When he died he was the Dean of the Faculty of Humanism, President of Comisión de Extensión Universitaria and President of the National Cuban Comissión of the UNESCO.
