Baritone Ángel Menéndez was born.

He was born in Cardenas, Matanzas in July 5th, 1928. As baritone he has played leading roles in operas and zarzuelas staged in Cuba. He has sung in Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia and he joins the cast of the Theater of the National Opera of Cuba.

Poet and Journalist Bonifacio Byrne passed away.

He was born in Matanzas in March 3rd,1861, and died in July 5th, 1936. In 1890 he settled the newspapers La Mañana and La Juventud Liberal.
He emigrated to the United States of America, where he became Secretary of the Revolutionary Club of Tampa. He collaborated in newspapers such as: El Ateneo, Diario de Matanzas, El Fígaro and La Discusión. He wrote stories, novels and theatre plays, being among these: El anónimo (1905), Varón en puerta (1905), El legado (1908), El espíritu de Martí (1908) and others. His best known work is his patriotic poem "Mi Bandera" ("My flag").
