He was born on September 5th, 1929. He studied Movies in the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia of Rome from 1951 to 1953, being Tomás Gutierrez and of the film section of the Sociedad Cultural Nuestro Tiempo ("Our Time Cultural Society"). In 1955 he made, together with other Cuban filmakers, such as Tomás Gutierrez Alea, Alfredo Guevara and Jorge Haydú..., El Mégano, considered as the root of the New Cuban Cinematography.
At the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution (January 1st, 1959), Julio García Espinosa is appointed Chief of the Section of Art of the Direction of Culture of the Rebel Army.
The earliest documentaries of the Cuban Revolution: Esta tierra nuestra and La Vivienda were made there. He is one of the settlers of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba and of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Arts and Industry, nowadays Cuban Film Institute, from which he became President.
As times went by he kept on making films, imparting courses, delivering lectures and writing.
Among his films are Aventuras de Juan Quin Quin and Reina y Rey; among his theoretical, works outstands: Por un cine imperfecto, considered as one of the founding manifestos of the so-called New Latin American Movies. He has written many essays and articles outstanding the aforementioned by his very personal movie insight. He has been considered a foreunner, a founder and a promoter of Cuban and Latin American Cinematography.
