Singer, composer and tres player Isaac Oviedo was born

He was born in Sabanilla, Matanzas province , in July 6th, 1902. Dirigió, In the 1920´s together with Julio Govín, he conducted the Septeto Matancero. Some time later he founded the Quinteto Típico with Graciano Gómez, playing Cuban popularr music concerts. In 1929 he travelled to Puerto Rico and in 1937 to the UInited States of America. he is considered on of the mos remarkable tres players born in Cuba. Author of quite Cuban compositions, outstanding among them: the son montuno “Engancha carretero”.

Composer, guitarist and interpreter Marta Valdés was born.

She was born in Havana in July 6th, 1934. She studied Philosophy and Letters in the University of Havana. She studied music with Francisqueta Vallalta, Guyún, Leopoldina Nuñez, and Harmony and Composition with Harold Gramatges. She has occasionally worked as intrrpreter in radio, TV and cabarets. She has also composed music for theater: El perro del hortelano, Pasado a la criolla, El alma buena de Se-Shuan, El becerro de oro, La Casa de Bernarda Alba and for the cinema: Lucía and Desarraigo.
She was Vicepresident of the Sociedad Cubana de Autores Musicales (Cuban Society of Musical Authors). She has written on themes of popular music. she has worked as musical adviser in the Teatro Estudio Group,. Authoress of very broadcasted songs :: “En la imaginación”, “Tú dominas”, “No es preciso”, “Tú no sospechas”, “Si vuelves”, “Hay mil formas”, “Toma esta flor”, “Canción de la Plaza Vieja”, “Llora”, “Canción difícil”, “Aida”.

Poet, journalist and writer Gregorio Delgado Fernández died

He was born in Batabanó in April 8th, 1903 and died in Melena del Sur in July 6th, 1964. Member of the Academy of History of Cuba and of the Academy of History of Peru. He collaborated with numerous magazines, such as Bohemia and Cúspide. His book José Maceo won the Second National Prize on Literature.
1969
Guitarist and composer Alfredo Sánchez died.

He was born in Remedios, Las Villas, in May 15th, 1878 and died in Havana in July 6th, 1969. In 1895 he moved with his family to Caibarién, where he began his musical studies (Solpheggio, Piano and Singing) with Bueno Sisters. Soon he joined El Clavel choir, very popular in Caibarién. He began studying guitar under the guidance of professor Carlos Brave, then giving birth to his ealiest compositions, the songs “Ojos indefinibles”, “En el mar” and “Luna en Manhattan”. Shortly afterwards he composed muysic for Pedro Revuelta´s poems, being among them: “Pena de amor”, “Más allá”, “El perdón”, he joined the Band of Music of Caibarién, as saxophonist and clarinetist, conducted by maestro Jarque Gómez. In 1934 he settled in Havana, where he imparted guitar lessons. Later he was professor of music in the Public School No. 13.
1985
Poet, writer storyteller and movie scriptwriter, Luis Rogelio Nogueras passed away.

He was born in November 17th, 1944 and he died in July 6th, 1985.
Poet, narrator and movie scriptwriter, "Wichy" or "El Rojo" ("The Red") , as everybody knew him, was a genuine revolutionart. Besides "Cabeza de zanahoria", ("Carrot´s Head") which made him winner of the 1967 David Award, Nogueras´literary production on books is conformed by : Las quince mil vidas del caminante, Imitación de la vida ( Casa de las Américas Literary Award, 1981), El último caso del inspector, Nada del otro mundo; La forma de las cosas que vendrán, Hay muchos modos de lugar and Las palabras vuelven.
His book El gato y la liebre, was unpublished, althought part of it appeared in Nada del otro mundo. He also published the novels : El cuarto círculo written together with Guillermo Rodríguez Rivera and winner of the Anniversary of the Revolution Award , Y si muero mañana (UNEAC Award, 1977) and Nosotros los sobrevivientes (1982), the later filmed by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea (Titón).
An excerpt of his unpublished novel Encicloferia firstly titled Las manos vacías, appeared in the book El cisne salvaje.
