He was born in Bayamo, former Oriente, Province, in May 7th, 1797 and died in September 26th, 1879. He studied elementary school in his hometown. In 1814 he started in the Colegio San Basilio, in Santiago de Cuba, where he studied Laws and Philosophy. In 1816 he moved to Havana in order to study Philosophy with Presbyter Félix Varela in the Seminario de San Carlos, where he became Bachelor in Civil Laws in 1819. In 1821 he graduated in Philosophy in the University of Havana and became professor of this subject, substituting Varela in the Seminario de San Carlos. There he also was in charge of the Professorship of Physical Sciences. In 1824 he moved to the United States of America for studying. From 1826 to 1828 he lived in Cuba. Later he came back to the United States where he settled with Varela El Mensajero Semanal (1828-1831), being his editor and collaborator. In a contest summoned by the Real Sociedad Económica de La Habana, (Royal Economic Society of Havana) in 1829, he won the First Prix, that included the oficial title of Merit Associate, by his work: “Memoria sobre los caminos de la isla de Cuba� (Memory on the Roads of the Island of Cuba). In 1831 the same Institution awarded him with the �Memoria sobre la vagancia en la isla de Cuba� (Memory on Vagancy in the Island of Cuba). Again in Cuba, in 1832, he is appointed Director of the Revista Bimestre Cubana, where his “Memoria sobre la vagancia en la isla de Cuba� (Memory on Vagancy in the Island of Cuba) was published by the Comisión Permanente de Literatura de la Real Sociedad Económica. (Permanent Commission on Literature of the Royal Economic Society) that very year. Ater the debate concerning the Academia Cubana de Literatura (Cuban Academy on Literature), vigourously defended by Saco, he was banished by order of General Tacón. Saco went to Great Britain then to France and later to Madrid, where he joined the Club de Habaneros (Club of Havanese). He wrote works, about problems which scourged Cuba, publishing forbidden, by the censorship. In Paris, in 1835, he followed courses on chemistry at the Sorbone University with professors Thenard and Dumas. In 1836 he is appointed three times by his province, Oriente, Diputado a Cortes (Delegate to Courts), but he could never be in charge of it for different reasons. From 1837 to 1845 he travelled through Portugal, France, Italy, Austria and Germany. El Ateneo Democrático Cubano, of New York, granted him the title of Honorary Associate in 1854. He held a debate against the annexion of Cuba to the United States, where he Cirilo villaverde was among his opponents. He returned to Cuba at the end of that year. In 1861 Saco was appointed correspondent to the Liceo de Matanzas and Remarkable Academic to the Royal Academy of Medical, Physical and Natural Sciences of Havana. That year he returned to Europe. In 1865 he, together with other fifteen, was appointed Commissioner, from Cuba, to the Information Board, created to settle the basis upon which will lay the laws in favour of Cuba to be submitted to Spanish Courts. In 1866 he actively took part in the sessions of the Board, but it became a failure. His works were published in the Diario de La Habana, Revista de Cuba and Revista de la Sociedad Geográfica de Cuba; La Verdad, and Nuevo Mundo, from New York, and in El Abolicionista, La América, Crónica Hispano-americana, Revista Hispano-Americana, La Política, Mundo, La Discusión, de España, along his life. He translated from latin Elements of Roman Laws by Johann Gottlieb Heinecke; at the same time his works were translated, mainly to French. Shortly before his death he has been appointed Deputy to Courts, that he could not fulfill. The Revista de la Biblioteca Nacional José Martí has published several of his letters and works. He made use of the following pseudonyms: Un socio quejoso, Un patriota, El editor de la Revista Cubana, Los cubanos, Un amigo de la Academia, El amante de la ilustración, El amigo del orden, Un académico.

He was born in Santiago de Cuba, in December 31st, 1803 and died in Mexico, in May 7th, 1839. At the age of eight he translated Horatio. He studied Latin Grammar in the University of Caracas. His earliest handwritten poems known dated back to those years. In the University of Havana he began studying Laws, and around 1819, he acted in Matanzas in his play Eduardo IV o El usurpador clemente (presumible a translation) and created the tragedy Moctezuma y el sainete o El campesino espantado. He went to Mexico where he carried on his studies.

During these years he began collaborating in periodical publishings and compiled his earliest poetical compositions in two handwritten notebooks. He came back to Havana, where he became Bachelor in Laws, settled the Biblioteca de Damas (Ladies´Library), premiered the tragedy Atreo, imitation from French, in Matanzas (1822). In 1823 he became lawyer in Puerto Príncipe High Court of Justice. Back to Matanzas, he is denounced for conspiring against the Spanish domination, he is sentenced to jail in November 5th, 1823. He secretly shipped to Boston in November 14th. Later he went to New York and visited different places of the United States. In 1825 he moved to Mexico, being appointed officer of the Secretary of State and of the Bureau of Internal and External Affairs in 1826. For several months of that year he was co-editor of El Iris,. The mishappenings of his administrative career run parallelly with the intense political unrest of the country. He settled Tlalpam Miscelánea; he published Minerva magazine and collaborated in Noticioso General, Semanario Político y Literario de México, El Amigo del Pueblo, El Indicador Federal, El Sol, El Conservador, El Fénix de la Libertad, El Reformador, Recreo de las Familias, Diario del Gobierno de la República Mexicana, Diario del Gobierno Constitucional de La Habana, El Indicador Constitucional, Semanario de Matanzas, El Revisor Político y Literario, Diario de La Habana, La Moda o Recreo Semanal del Bello Sexo and Aguinaldo Habanero. In November 1936 he travelled to Havana, after a short staying he came back to Veracruz, where he worked as editor of the Diario del Gobierno, in January, 1937.

He was born in Havana in May 7th, 1918 and died in February 23rd, 1991. EIn 1943 he graduated on Pedagogics in the University of Havana, and in 1945 in the Municipal Conservatory of thas city, in which he studied with professors Mompó, Luaces and Pérez Sentenat. He began studying composition with José Ardévol and completed his formation with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. In 1951 an scholarship was granted to him for studying folklore and musical didactics in the University of Chile. He travelled along American, Eurepean and �frican countries, delivering lectures and courses: University of Santiago de Chile, (Panorama of Cuban Musical Folklore) Ministry of Education, Lima, Peru( Black People in Cuban Musical Folklore) 1951; School of Antropology, Mexico, (Ethnological Factors of Cuban People) University of Humboldt, Berlin, (Ethnological Factors of Cuban People), 1967. He took part in several international events; delegate to the VIII International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences, Moscow, 1964; Meeting of the working groups for the study of music in Latin America, held in Caracas, Venezuela, summoned by UNESCO. Besides, he has collaborated, in foreign magazines: Scientific World, London; Algérie Actualité, Algiers; América Indígena, Mexico; Abbandlungen und bericbte des staatliche Museums für volker-kunde Dresden, Dresde, Germany. From 1961 to 1970 he directed the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba. He was also director of the Music Department of the “josé Martí� National Library, professor of the Municipal Conservatory of Havana; of African Art and Black Cultures of Cuba, in the University of Havana. He was professor of musicology of the Higher Studies Arts Institute (Instituto Superior de Arte, ISA), and Director of the Departament of Music of Casa de las Américas. His compositions are fundamentally based upon folkloric music, but making them through quite ellaborated technical elements.

It was settled in May 7th, 1962, in Havana, under the guidance of Rogelio Martínez Furé and Rodolfo Reyes Cortés. Along all these years it has fulfilled the task of picking up Cuban dance and musical expressions, according to scientific researches all over the country, this labor was developed by its founder and folkloric adviser, Rogelio Martínez Furé. In its repertoire are: Yoruba Cycle, Congo Cycle, Rumbas and comparsas, Yoruba-Iyesá Cycle, Abakuá Cycle, Cycle of Popular Music, Alafín de Oyó, Cuban Pictures, Palenque, among others. Among the awards and trophies conferred to this ensemble are: The Golden Barrel and the Silver Necklace, 1975, in the Autumn Games and the XXX International Feasts of the Ville, held in Dijon, France; The Golden Usuta, trophy conferred in Festidanza 74, Arequipa, Perú; Silver Tray, conferred by the Folkloric Festival of Billingliam, England, 1976, and others. It has made 13 international tours and visited 20 countries: France, Belgium, Spain, Hungary, Czechoslovakia Bulgaria, Poland, Rumania, England, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Algeria, Guyana, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Jamaica, Barbados, Peru, Colombia and the formers German Democratic Republic and Soviet Union. It has participated in: Festival of Theatre and Dance, in the Sarah Berhardt Theatre of the Nations, Paris, 1964; VI Festival of Latin American Theatre, Havana, 1966; Carifesta 72, Georgetown, Guyana; Festival of Cuban Popular Art, Havana, 1973; Folkloric Festival of the IV Conference of the Non Aligned Country, Algers, 1973; Celebration Days of the Cuban Culture in the USSR, Moscow, Leningrad and Riga, 1973; II Cervantino International Festival, Guanajuato, Mexico, 1974; Festidanza 74, Arequipa, Peru, 1974; L'Humanité Festival, Paris, 1975; Festivities for the V Anniversary of the Independence of Guyana, Georgetown, 1975 and others.

He was born in Guantánamo in August 25th, 1915 and died in Havana in May 7th, 1970. He played in several jazz bands, and ultimately, in the Cuban Orchestra of Modern Music. He was soloist in the National Symphonic Orchestra. He made several recordings, in many records he played trumpet solos. He was considered one of the most remarkable trumpeteers of Cuba.
