1894
Miguel Matamoros, composer, guitarist and director of the famous Matamoros trio was born.

He was born in Santiago de Cuba, in May 8th, 1894 and died in April 15th, 1971. He work in different areas, among them: driver, carpenter, wall painter, etc, in his hometown. At the same time he was deepening in the study of guitar and cultivating his voice. He sang and played his instrument in Santiago de Cuba serenades, getting into the world of Cuban Trova. Natural, spontaneous and intuitive musician he made his debut at the Heredia Theater in Santiago de Cuba. Remarkable composer and guitarist, being a child he played harmonica and guitar; his first artistic experience was the duet he made with Trino Martinelli. In 1924 he travelled to Havana with the Oriental Trio, in which he joined Rafael Cueto (1900) and Miguel Bisbé, performing in Campoamor and Actualidades theaters. Back to Santiago de Cuba, in May 8th, 1925 Miguel added Siro Rodríguez (1899) in the Oriental Trio as second voice, genesis of the coming Matamoros Trio. Two years later he went to New York, getting great success leading the trio, and there he made some records for the RCA Victor discographic house.
He toured along all American continent and many European countries with his partners. Author of boleros and sones: “Lágrimas negras”, “Juramento”, “Reclamo místico”, “Mariposita de primavera”, “Mientes”, “Triste muy triste”, “Olvido”, “Mamá son de la loma”, “El que siembra su maíz”, “Que te están mirando”, “Alegre conga”, among many others. As guitarist and first voice, Miguel was quite sure in plucking, good taste and a had a singular sense of rhytm and phrasing. Deeply Cuban composer, his fresh ideas and eloquent rhythm made possible that his genuinely popular music was a synthesis of Cubanship.

Writeress Emilia Bernal was born.

She was born in Nuevitas, Camagüey, in May 8th, 1894 and died in Washington, in 1964. Authoress of a quite huge bibliography. She published essays, translations, narrations and an autobiographic novel. Her chilhood and teens took place in fields nearby her hometown, with no scheduled studies, although her mother was a rural teacher. During the 1895 Independence War her house was burn out, and she moved to Santo Domingo Island with her parents. But shortly afterwards ther came back having no way to earn their live. He moved to Havana and in 1910 she published her earliest compositions. She collaborated in La Nación, Bohemia, Social, El Fígaro and travelled along different countries of America and Europe. Great part of her life was spent out of Cuba.

Singer Miguelito Cuní was born.

He was born in Pinar del Río, in May 8th, 1917 and died in Havana in March 3rd, 1984. He debutted with Rolando Lluis Yamilé Orchestra in his hometown. In 1938 he was singing with the Ernesto Muñoz orchestra, and after some performings with Arcaño y sus Maravillas; in 1940 he joined the conjunto (musical group) of Arsenio Rodríguez. Some time late, in 1956, he began singing with Benny More´s Giant Band, with Bebo Valdés´orchestra in 1959, and for many long with the Conjunto Chapottin. He has travelled along Venezuela, Panamá, United States of America and Curazao. Countless discographic recordings were made by him, who also performed in the Cuban documentary Nosotros la música and in many others. Among his compositions are: “Todos bailan con la guajira” and “Guachinango” (sones) and the bolero “Las ansias mías”.
1935
Important playwright and theatre director Albio Paz was born.

One of the most important Cuban theatre directors considered by many as the Quixote of the national stage due to his physiognomy and character. He was born in Zuleta, Santa Clara in May 8th, 1935 and died, victim of cancer in Havana City in May 28th, 2005.
He was one of the 12 Cuban theatre specialists teatristas who moved from Havana to the mountains of the center of the island to settle the Grupo Teatro Escambray in 1968. His plays: “La vitrina” and “El paraíso recobrado” have become true paradygms of that important group aesthetics. His endless vocation for research theatre curiosity led him to search ro new audiences, and to settle community experiences in the mountains of Sierra del Rosario and Moa.
In 1980 his play “Huelga” (”On Strike”) won the Casa de las Américas Award Theater staged by maestro Santiago García heading the Cubana de Acero Theater Group. That play was warmly welcomed by the audience and the critic from those years. Since the 1980´s he settled down in the City of Matanzas, where he founded the Mirón Cubano Group, and he fostered, promóted and developed the street theater, climax of his intense work interested on searching new languages reaching a wider and wider audience.
Among his most relevant plays are: “Las penas que a mí me matan”, “El gato y la golondrina”, and “De la extraña y anacrónica aventura de Don Quijote en un ínsula del Caribe y otros sucesos dignos de saberse y representarse”, selected to participate in the 400th Anniversary of the top literary work of Spanish literature, held in Spain.
His theater has been evaluated and gathered by the critic in several volumes, the most recent before his death was the anthology: “Las penas que a mi me matan y otras obras de teatro” published by Editorial Alarcós.

Filmaker and writer Luis Felipe Bernaza was born

He was born in May 8th, 1940 and died in New York in March 19th, 2001. Being a teenager he joined the revolutionary struggle against Fulgencio Batista dictatorship and the July 26th Revolutionary Movement led by Fidel Castro. He got some awards on behalf of his dramatic labour. As filmaker he developed a long career as documentary maker and conducted long feature documentaries. Some of his documentaries were awarded in national and international festivals.
