He was born in Havana in March 1, 1939  in a family of musicians. Grandson of Ernestina Lecuona and grandson nephew of Ernesto Lecuona. Universally acknowledged as a great guitarist, he started his studies with maestro Isaac Nicola, although he is an autodidact in other musical disciplines. General Director of the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba (National Symphonic Orchestra of Cuba), he is also General Director of the Institución Filarmónica Nacional since 1981.

Guitarist, composer, orchestra conductor, researcher, pedagogue and cultural promoter, he is one of the most acknowledged musicians nowadays. Besides, he plays cello, clarinet, percussion and piano. Quite important is his advisory work for the Cuban radio and television; for directing and arranging the earliest music departaments of the Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC) and of the Teatro Musical de La Habana; for renewing the study plans of Harmony, Contrapunto and Composition subjects; for founding and conducting the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC; for taking part as Jury in diverse national and foreign festivals; and for conducting more than 80 symphonic orchestras and chamber groups, all over the world.

Titular Conductor of the Orquesta de Córdoba, Spain; Honorary Member of the UNESCO, the SGAE, the Italian-Latin American Institute and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Granada. Besides, he is a guest composer of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Berlin.

He has been acknowledged with : "La Chitarra con amore 1997" (Milán, Italy); "Manuel de Falla 1998" (Spain); Foster Son of the City of Córdoba and Andalucía. UNESCO Musician 2001 and Doctor Honoris Causa by the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA, in Spanish), in Havana.
